NBA 2K27 Review: MyNBA Legacy Steals the Show in One of 2K’s Strongest Packages Yet

NBA 2K27 improves nearly every corner of the series, from deeper franchise management and historical MyCAREER options to a more welcoming City. MyNBA Legacy is the standout, but familiar monetization and some gameplay frustrations keep this from being an uncontested championship.

2K / Visual Concepts

Annual sports games have a difficult job.

They need to feel familiar enough that returning players immediately understand them, but different enough to justify asking those same players to spend another $70.

NBA 2K27 comes closer to finding that balance than many recent entries in the series.

Visual Concepts has not rebuilt NBA 2K from the ground up. The basic structure remains recognizable. MyCAREER is still chasing the fantasy of becoming an NBA superstar. The City remains the online playground. MyTEAM is still built around collecting players. MyNBA remains the franchise mode for people who would rather negotiate a contract than buy another pair of virtual sneakers.

But this year, several of those modes feel more ambitious.

And if you are the type of basketball fan who has ever wondered what would happen if your favorite player got a completely different career, MyNBA Legacy might be the best idea NBA 2K has introduced in years.

Gameplay Feels More Intentional

Everything starts on the court, and NBA 2K27 makes meaningful changes on both sides of the ball.

Offensively, players have more freedom through expanded dribbling customization, new step through moves and a Dynamic Layup Engine designed to make finishes react naturally to the situation around the rim. Advanced layups now combine gathers and finishes dynamically instead of relying entirely on predetermined animation packages.

The result is a game trying to make individual possessions feel less scripted.

Dribbling customization is especially deep. Instead of selecting one complete package, players can mix individual moves from different NBA stars. That means a ball handler can combine pieces of Stephen Curry, Trae Young and other players into something more personal.

Defense has received plenty of attention too.

Hands up defense has been reworked, defensive cutoffs give skilled defenders another way to stop drives, shot contests provide more detailed feedback and ankle breakers now depend more heavily on momentum and positioning instead of simply triggering through chance.

AI controlled teams also run more intelligent early offense, seek favorable matchups and use a new Set AI system that tries to make stars function as actual offensive hubs.

There is still a learning curve here.

NBA 2K increasingly wants players to understand basketball and understand NBA 2K's control systems at the same time. Every dunk now uses the Dunk Meter, and Rhythm Shooting still places a strong emphasis on timing. That creates a rewarding skill ceiling, but it can also make basic basketball actions feel more complicated than they need to be for casual players.

When everything works, though, 2K27 produces some excellent basketball.

MyNBA Is Back to Acting Like a Franchise Mode

This is where NBA 2K27 really gets my attention.

2K says its goal with MyNBA this year was to “get back to basics,” and the changes reflect that.

Free agency has been expanded with a more realistic moratorium period, contract negotiations have more factors to consider, and superstar players can make demands beyond simply wanting the largest contract.

There is also a new GM Trust system.

Your reputation as a front office executive changes depending on how you treat players, fulfill promises and operate your organization. A trustworthy GM can have an easier time convincing players to believe in a pitch, while breaking promises can make future negotiations more difficult.

This is exactly the kind of feature franchise modes need.

Sports games are at their best when decisions have consequences beyond an overall rating changing by one point.

NBA front offices are complicated. Relationships matter. Player expectations matter. Contracts matter. Team direction matters.

NBA 2K27 gets closer to making those things feel interconnected.

The ability to run a franchise for up to 100 years also opens the door for ridiculous levels of long term experimentation.

And then 2K decided that was not enough.

MyNBA Legacy Is the Star of NBA 2K27

MyNBA Legacy is my favorite idea in the entire game.

It takes franchise mode and mixes it with an RPG style player career.

You choose a player from the Modern Era as your Legend. You can keep that player's current abilities or reset them to their rookie version and essentially rewrite their entire career.

But you are not abandoning franchise management to do it.

You still operate the organization while also controlling your chosen player on the court.

That combination is what makes Legacy special.

Traditional MyCAREER asks you to create yourself and become the star.

Traditional MyNBA asks you to control the organization.

Legacy asks a much more interesting question:

What if you controlled the organization and the legacy of one of its players at the same time?

Want to take a young superstar and see what happens if his career unfolds without injuries?

You can.

Want to build an organization entirely around one player and chase records for decades?

You can.

Want to see whether a current young player can eventually pass Jordan, LeBron or Kareem in the record books?

Go try it.

Progression includes statistical milestones, awards, playoff accomplishments and career records. Completing objectives provides XP that can improve your Legend through Performance Points, Badge upgrades, Training Camps and Bonus Abilities.

The final progression tier is Eternal G.O.A.T., and Legacy can even extend advantages into future generations of a player's family as the larger MyNBA universe continues.

It is wonderfully excessive.

And that is exactly why it works.

Sports games desperately need modes that make players say, “Wait, I can do what?”

Legacy does that.

For franchise players, this alone may provide hundreds of hours of experimentation.

MyCAREER Finally Has Multiple Ways to Live the Dream

MyCAREER also receives one of its biggest structural changes in years.

Players are no longer limited to beginning their careers in the modern NBA.

MyCAREER Eras allows you to begin in five different periods of league history:

The Magic vs. Bird Era in 1984.

The Jordan Era in 1991.

The Kobe Era in 2003.

The LeBron Era in 2010.

And the Steph Era in 2016.

These are more than roster swaps.

2K changes presentation elements, rules, locker rooms, score graphics, visual filters and other details to better represent each period. Historical rookies also enter the league at the correct time, and major player movement is structured around actual history.

It gives MyCAREER something it has needed for a long time: variety.

You are no longer creating essentially the same NBA journey every year.

Dropping your player into Michael Jordan's league or trying to compete during Kobe Bryant's era creates completely different fantasies.

Fire & Concrete Is the Traditional MyCAREER Experience

Players who prefer a modern career can follow Fire & Concrete, NBA 2K27's main cinematic MyCAREER story.

It spans 11 chapters, more than twice the length of NBA 2K26's story, and follows your player from a top high school prospect through a serious career setback and eventually toward the NBA.

Rucker Park plays an important role, while Vince Staples portrays your cousin Cam.

Your performance can affect your NBA Draft position, including the possibility of earning the No. 1 selection. Players can also choose their team if they want more direct control over where their career begins.

It is still very much a 2K story.

Some players will enjoy the cinematics and characters. Others are going to mash the skip button until their controller files a complaint.

At least NBA 2K27 gives both groups options.

Co Op MyCAREER Is a Great Addition

For the first time, MyCAREER also supports cooperative play.

Your career introduces Trace Miller, a teammate whose build you can shape using templates inspired by stars such as Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant, Luka Dončić and Nikola Jokić.

A friend can then enter your MyCAREER and control Trace.

If that friend leaves, the AI takes control again.

It is a simple idea that should have existed years ago.

Basketball is inherently social, and being able to experience an NBA career alongside another person makes far more sense than keeping the entire journey isolated.

Both players can also earn their own VC and Season XP during co op sessions.

The City Is Better at Knowing Who It Is For

The City remains massive, competitive and heavily connected to NBA 2K's live service structure.

But NBA 2K27 makes some smart changes.

For the first time, The City is co ed, allowing male and female MyPLAYERs to compete together across modes including The REC, Theater, Park, Proving Grounds, Ante Up and Street Kings.

Crew HQ is one of the stronger additions.

Crews receive their own headquarters where members can practice, communicate, play private games and compete in ranked 3v3 and 5v5 matches. Crew rankings stretch from Bronze through the top competitive tier, with seasonal tournaments providing another reason for organized groups to stay together.

Then there is Casual Corner, which might be one of The City's most important quality of life changes.

Newer players can gradually work from CPU competition toward actual human opponents rather than immediately being thrown into games against people who have been perfecting the same jumpshot since breakfast.

Rucker Park also joins Street Kings, giving the mode one of basketball culture's most important locations.

The City is still not going to appeal to everyone.

There are players who simply want to select an NBA team and play basketball without walking through a virtual shopping district.

But for players who enjoy the social side of 2K, this is a stronger version of the concept.

MyTEAM Still Comes With the Same Big Question

MyTEAM remains NBA 2K's card collecting mode, and 2K27 expands progression rather than dramatically changing the formula.

Player Cards now have individual Player XP, providing another progression path for cards players actually use. The Exchange has been expanded, Breakout progression has been updated, multiplayer options rotate and the Auction House has been unified.

If you enjoy constructing fantasy lineups, completing challenges and constantly improving your collection, MyTEAM remains one of the game's deepest modes.

But it is impossible to discuss MyTEAM without discussing monetization.

2K itself states that NBA 2K27 contains optional in game purchases and paid random items.

That does not automatically make MyTEAM bad.

It does mean the mode can sometimes feel like it is competing for your wallet almost as aggressively as it competes for your time.

For some players, that entire ecosystem is the attraction.

For others, it will remain the easiest mode to ignore.

The W Gets Meaningful Attention

The W continues to grow instead of being treated like an obligation.

NBA 2K27 introduces a Build as You Go progression system, allowing players to remove attribute investments and redirect them elsewhere as their career develops. Physical characteristics such as height, weight and wingspan now directly affect attribute ceilings.

Team Badges and Teammate Badges add another layer of chemistry.

Your relationship with specific teammates can create bonuses in situations such as pick and roll actions, while broader Team Badges influence the entire squad.

Play calling develops alongside your career as well.

You begin without full control of the offense and gradually earn additional responsibilities as the coaching staff trusts you.

That small detail makes the career progression feel more believable.

A rookie should not walk onto a professional team and immediately start ordering every veteran around like she bought the franchise yesterday.

MyWNBA Deserves Credit Too

MyWNBA may quietly be one of the best improvements in the package.

2K says the mode now mirrors MyNBA, bringing over the same franchise mechanics, simulation options and team management tools.

That matters.

A WNBA franchise mode should not feel like the smaller version of the NBA mode.

Players can manage trades, drafts and long term team building with the same broader franchise philosophy available elsewhere in the game.

That gives WNBA fans significantly more depth than simply playing individual games.

Play Now Still Matters

Sometimes you do not want a 100 year franchise.

Sometimes you do not want to grind badges, open packs, walk through The City or become the next face of Nike.

Sometimes somebody comes over, talks a little too confidently about their favorite team, and needs to be dealt with immediately.

That is where the traditional NBA experience still matters.

Play Now remains the simplest way to appreciate NBA 2K27's core gameplay, teams, stars and presentation without worrying about progression systems.

And honestly, sports games should never forget that.

All of these massive modes exist because the five on five basketball underneath them works.

The Presentation Is Still Among Sports Gaming's Best

NBA 2K has been visually impressive for years, and 2K27 continues that trend.

Player models, arenas, lighting, crowd presentation and broadcast elements help maintain the feeling that you are controlling something designed to resemble an NBA broadcast rather than simply playing basketball inside a video game arena.

Game Informer described the franchise as potentially possessing the best gameplay, visuals and franchise mode in sports gaming, while also criticizing how heavily some parts of the package continue to rely on microtransactions.

That contradiction basically describes modern NBA 2K.

There is an outstanding basketball game in here.

Sometimes it is just surrounded by a storefront.

The Biggest Problem Has Not Disappeared

NBA 2K27's greatest weakness is familiar.

Monetization still hangs over parts of the experience.

The game already costs full price.

There are then modes built around VC, digital cosmetics, progression and randomized paid items.

The City in particular can occasionally feel less like a basketball neighborhood and more like somebody put an NBA arena inside a shopping mall.

Game Informer's launch impressions noted that MyCAREER appears less aggressive about pushing players toward those systems than some previous entries, especially if you focus primarily on the single-player career. But the monetized ecosystem remains present outside that bubble.

That matters when evaluating the entire product.

MyNBA Legacy being fantastic does not erase the financial pressure players can encounter elsewhere.

MyNBA Legacy Changes the Value Equation

Despite those complaints, NBA 2K27 offers a ridiculous amount of basketball.

That is ultimately what makes this year's entry easier to recommend.

If you only play MyCAREER, you have modern storytelling, historical careers and co op.

If you live online, The City has more ways to play.

If you collect cards, MyTEAM has another full year of content waiting.

WNBA players have deeper career and franchise options.

And franchise players may have received the biggest gift of all.

MyNBA Legacy feels like somebody inside Visual Concepts finally asked what happens when franchise mode stops trying to imitate a spreadsheet and starts embracing the fact that it is also a video game.

It is weird.

It is deep.

It invites experimentation.

And it creates stories that belong specifically to your save.

That is exactly what a great franchise mode should do.

Final Verdict

This is not a perfect basketball game.

The increasing complexity of shooting and finishing will not work for everybody. The monetization surrounding MyTEAM and The City remains difficult to ignore. And because NBA 2K is an annual franchise, some players who already own 2K26 will reasonably question whether every improvement justifies another full-price purchase.

But there is also a lot to respect here.

MyCAREER Eras is a smart expansion. Co op career play feels overdue. The City is becoming more accessible. The W and MyWNBA receive real attention. Gameplay continues moving toward rewarding basketball IQ and deliberate control.

And then there is MyNBA Legacy.

For me, that is the feature that pushes NBA 2K27 over the line from another good 2K into one of the series' most interesting recent releases.

Being able to run a franchise for generations while simultaneously shaping a player's career, records, abilities and eventual legacy taps directly into what makes sports games special.

Real basketball eventually tells us what happened.

NBA 2K27 lets us ask what could have happened instead.
