Miami Beach Moves Forward With Potential GTA VI Marketing Campaign After Divided Vote

Miami Beach commissioners voted 4-3 to authorize negotiations for a GTA VI promotional campaign reportedly valued around $3 million. The proposed campaign would place subtle “VI” and “Vice City” branding on privately operated beach chairs and umbrellas, but no final agreement has been signed.

Vice City could soon begin appearing in the real city that inspired it.

The Miami Beach City Commission voted 4-3 on September 10 to let city officials negotiate a potential marketing agreement connected to Grand Theft Auto VI.

The proposed campaign would reportedly bring approximately $3 million to Miami Beach in exchange for limited GTA VI branding along the beachfront. However, commissioners only authorized negotiations. The vote did not finalize or sign an agreement with Rockstar Games. PC Gamer

Rockstar has not publicly announced the campaign.

Vice City Branding Could Reach the Beach

The proposal is much more restrained than turning Miami Beach into a giant GTA advertisement.

Branding would reportedly appear on chairs and umbrellas operated by the private beach concession company Boucher Brothers. The campaign would primarily use the Roman numeral “VI” and the name “Vice City” instead of displaying the complete Grand Theft Auto name.

Commissioners said the promotional material would not appear on city-owned landmarks, including Miami Beach’s recognizable lifeguard stands.

The tentative campaign period runs from October 15 through December 31, 2026, although the advertising would be excluded during Art Basel in December. Dates, payment and other terms could still change during negotiations.

That distinction matters. Miami Beach has approved the conversation, not the completed deal.

A Close Vote Followed a Heated Debate

The proposal passed by a single vote following a public debate over whether Miami Beach should associate itself with a franchise centered on criminal activity.

Commissioner David Suarez argued that the city should not help promote a game featuring car theft, robberies, drugs and violence against law enforcement. During the meeting, he showed footage from GTA V and GTA VI to support his position.

Other commissioners approached the proposal as a tourism and revenue opportunity.

Commissioner Monica Matteo-Salinas argued that playing a crime focused video game does not mean players will imitate its behavior in real life. Commissioner Joseph Magazine also noted that GTA VI’s version of South Florida will attract worldwide attention whether the city participates in the campaign or not.

The final 4-3 result reflected that divide.

The Real Beach Company Already Has a GTA Counterpart

One detail makes the proposed partnership especially interesting.

Boucher Brothers, the company operating the beach equipment that could carry the advertising, appears to have inspired Sol Sisters, a fictional beach-concession business visible in GTA VI’s version of Vice City.

Sol Sisters umbrellas can be seen in official Rockstar footage, creating a direct connection between Miami Beach’s real tourism industry and Rockstar’s fictional interpretation of it.

That makes beach chairs and umbrellas a surprisingly fitting location for the campaign. The advertisement would sit beside something the game has already transformed into satire.

This Is Separate From the Miami-Dade Proposal

Miami Beach’s vote should not be confused with the broader GTA VI proposal involving Miami-Dade County.

Miami-Dade officials have discussed potential promotions involving major public facilities, including Miami International Airport and transportation locations. County Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez and Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz publicly opposed that proposal, arguing that public resources should not promote a fictional version of Miami associated with crime and violence.

Miami Beach is a separate city government inside Miami-Dade County. Its current proposal is narrower and focused on privately operated beach equipment.

Neither campaign has been publicly confirmed by Rockstar Games.

What This Means for GTA VI’s Marketing

The vote shows how large GTA VI has become before it is even available.

Most games purchase advertisements in major cities. GTA VI has inspired local governments to debate whether entire pieces of South Florida should participate in its launch campaign.

Rockstar is also in an unusual position. Vice City is fictional, but its identity is inseparable from Miami’s beaches, nightlife, architecture and culture. Advertising the game in South Florida would blur the line between the real location and Rockstar’s exaggerated version of it.

If negotiations result in a final agreement, players could see Vice City branding on Miami Beach beginning roughly one month before the game’s release.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

For now, Miami Beach has opened the door to a partnership. Rockstar still has to walk through it.
